The PowerBook 100 was designed with Sony and introduced everything the Macintosh Portable had failed to be: light, affordable, and genuinely portable at 5.1 pounds. It sold 100,000 units in its first three months and defined the laptop category for years. The trackball positioned behind the keyboard became the template every competitor copied. It was Apple's most successful new product launch to that point.
