The Performa 5440 was a Japan- and Europe-exclusive variant of the 5400 that arrived three months before its American speed-bump siblings, and it stood out for reasons beyond its specs: where virtually every Mac of 1996 came dressed in Apple's familiar warm beige, the 5440 shipped in an ultracool dark gray chassis — a quiet preview of the design language Apple would make famous two years later with the iMac. At 180 MHz on a PowerPC 603e it was no faster than the US 5400/180 that followed in early 1997, but with its integrated 15-inch shadow-mask display and that distinctive dark enclosure it felt like a different machine entirely. Collectors often seek it out precisely because it was never sold in North America, making it a rare survivor in a sea of beige.
