The IIx upgraded the original Mac II's 68020 to a 68030, bringing a faster MMU and math performance without changing the chassis or NuBus architecture. Released in 1988, it was immediately overshadowed by the IIcx released at the same time — smaller, cheaper, with the same processor. The IIx was for customers who had already invested in the larger II's six-slot expansion and didn't want to downgrade.
